Post Adoptive Trace Enquiries – Tracing Birth Parents
Adopted Adults will probably never have known their birth parents and, although possibly being brought up in a loving adopted family, the emotional turmoil of “not knowing” can linger throughout and into adulthood.
Adopted adults in the UK have had the right since 1975 to see their original birth certificate when they turn 18. Since legal adoption was first introduced, the age for this in Scotland has been 16 years old. With this information, it is possible to find out the birth mothers’ name, and in some cases the birth fathers’ name too. For some, just the knowledge of who their birth parents are is enough. However, in some cases, they may also want to trace and locate their birth parents.
How can I trace my birth parents?
There are a number of methods available to trace birth parents. The UK Government offer the Adoption-Contact-Register, where the adopted children can leave personal details, indicating to their biological family that they wish to contact them. However, this requires the biological relatives to have also registered for it to be effective.
You could also hire a Private Investigator firm to help track down your birth parents. If you have your relevant information concerning your Birth Parent/s we at Insight can conduct discreet enquiries to bring that information up to date and ascertain their current whereabouts and, if practical, act as a third party between you should contact be difficult.
